Improving your heart health tends to be something that you start to think about once you get older …. ahem, I mean become more mature! But there really is no time like the present to look after your heart. After all, prevention is better than cure, right? If you want to know the estimation of your heart age, the NHS has a handy calculator that can be found here. It really is as easy as following a few simple steps in order to start to improve your heart heath. Here are our top suggestions.

If you smoke, STOP

Care Check CheckupThis seems like a bit of an obvious one, but your little habit is well known for being a major contributor of cardiovascular disease. It can be difficult to stop, but in this day and age, there is more help out there than ever before to break that nasty habit. Outwith improving your heart health and preventing long term damage, by quitting smoking, the improvements you’ll see in your skin and hair will be worth it.  You’ll look years younger in no time at all.

Get moving

It is recommended that you exercise daily to really reap the rewards but if you have never been one for exercise, this can seem a little daunting. Don’t worry, even if you only start off with a daily 10 minute walk, increasing the time and pace the more you get used it, you will soon see that you are able to do way more than you think you can. In order to keep your heart in the best condition possible, you need to be doing exercises that get your heart rate going. The easiest way to do this is by incorporating exercise into your daily routine. Try taking the stairs over the lift or not taking the car short distances – it’s better for the environment too!

Limit alcohol intake

There are many reasons why you should cut back on how much alcohol you drink; your heart health is just one of them. Just think of all the empty calories you are consuming every time you have a boozy night out. By cutting back, not only will you feel better mentally and physically, you’ll look better too. And, imagine not facing the following day with a killer hangover! In all seriousness though, drinking too much or binge drinking, which is the culture we’re all too familiar with, really does put a heck of a strain on the old ticker.

Up your fruit and veg intake

Appetizer BowlsEating the recommended amount of daily fruit and veg provides us with the nutrients needed to lower the risk of heart disease.  They can help to lower cholesterol, decrease blood pressure and even prevent the hardening of arteries. The guidelines these days are that we eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and 4 servings of fruit daily but incorporating this amount can sometimes be difficult, especially if you’re not used to it.

Why not invest in a juicer?  What could be easier than drinking the majority of your recommended intake, not to mention that starting your day with a super healthy green juice will certainly put a spring in your step. Juicing can have a transformational effect on your life. Check out some easy to follow recipes from the Juice Master himself, Jason Vale.

So, there you go, some easy to follow steps that I’m sure you’ve heard a thousand times but by actually putting them into practice, your heart will reap the rewards and you will feel the benefits of these changes all over. However, if you already have any concerns and would like to consult an expert, services like that of OneWelbeck Heart Health are there to help diagnose, treat and manage a vast range of conditions.
